Please join our Association and help preserve a unique collection of historic railway carriages.
Members and working volunteers are equally welcome. Members receive a quarterly Newsletter with up to date news on developments before they get reported in the railway press.
Working volunteers are welcome and no specific skills are needed. Our volunteers find it a really enjoyable experience, and if you have the time, it’s a great way of spending it.
Every October, lockdowns permitting, a special LNERCA train runs on the North York Moors Railway, using the Associations’ teak carriages.
All Association members and working volunteers are invited to ride on this exclusive train, which is a great opportunity to meet other like-minded people.

To join the LNERCA, please download the membership form here and send it to the address below or by email, together with your payment.

For every pound you give as your donation, we (LNERCA) are able to claim another 25p.
History
All but two of the fleet, which includes those owned by the LNERCA, those privately owned, and those, which are affiliated, ended their working days as Departmental carriages, i.e., their final use was with the Engineering departments, such as the Civil Engineer or the Chief Mechanical & Electrical Engineer. For these uses, they were invariably extensively altered, with gangway ends removed and various fittings, such as seating, luggage racks and toilets, removed. Whilst this extended use gave the carriages a further lease of life, by the time they were finally withdrawn, their condition was often dire, and necessitated a complete rebuild from the frame upwards – taking the small band of volunteers years to do so!

LNERCA is a volunteer run charity, entirely independent of the NYMR.
Funding for its restoration projects comes from membership subscriptions, bequests, charitable donations and grants.
The cost of a typical coach restoration project is anything from
£50,000 upwards, despite the fact that much of the labour required is provided voluntarily by LNERCA members.
Purchases from our shop also supplement this income (so please visit our shop page for more details).
